Our 4-week fencing beginners' course is suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over.

Sessions run on Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Penistone Grammar School, Huddersfield Road, Penistone, S36 7BX. Please see the Finding Us link for directions and a map.

The course costs £40.00, and all equipment is provided, so there’s no need to bring anything except comfortable sportswear and enthusiasm.

What to Expect

​

6:30pm – Warm-Up and Games
Each session begins with a group warm-up and some light games to get everyone moving and ready to fence.

Beginners’ Lessons
If you're enrolled on the beginners’ course, you’ll receive a dedicated lesson during the first part of each session. These lessons are led by experienced fencers and designed to help you build confidence, learn key techniques, and feel comfortable on the piste.

7:30pm onwards – Free Fencing and Experienced Fencers
After 7:30pm, the focus shifts towards free fencing and advanced practice. This time is primarily for experienced fencers, but beginners are welcome to observe or join in gradually as they gain confidence.

Structured Support for Beginners
To help newer fencers make the most of free fencing time, we provide a pool sheet. This gives structure to the session and makes it easier to know who to fence and when, helping create a smoother, more inclusive experience for everyone.
